Documentary collections or drafts are often used as a form of payment in an export transaction to protect the interests of both the buyer and seller. This method requires that payment be made on presentation of documents conveying the title and showing that specific steps have been taken. Drafts that are paid at presentation are called sight drafts. Drafts that are paid at a later date, often after the buyer receives the goods, are called time drafts.
A transmittal letter is used and contains complete and precise instructions on how the documents should be handled and how the payment is to be made.

An export packing list is typically more detailed than a standard packing list. It itemizes the material in each package and indicates the type of package. It also shows the weights and measures for each package, usually in both the U.S. and metric systems. The shipper or forwarding agent uses the list to determine the total weight and volume and whether the correct cargo is being shipped. In addition, U.S. and foreign customs officials may use the list to check the cargo.

The Shipper's Letter of Instruction (SLI), while not required by any regulatory agency, serves a very important function. Its purpose is to convey specific instructions from the exporter to his agent, usually an international freight forwarder.

While a standard Shipper’s Letter of Instruction (see above) provides transportation and documentary instructions to a freight forwarder, it does not typically include the additional information required to authorize and allow a forwarder to transmit Electronic Export Information (EEI) to the Automated Export System (AES) on the shipper’s behalf. This version of the SLI form includes these additional data fields.
